Installation

I downloaded and installed Kubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) live CD. The installation runs perfectly, but note that the wireless network card does not work without tweaking. See installation procedure of the wireless network card below.

Power saving
kacpid is a kernel-daemon process, it handles power-saving functionality and a few other things that are specific to ACPI compliant motherboards (like monitoring temperatures, rpm's of fans, ... ).

The problem is already flagged as a bug but still not solved at this time.

There are 3 workarounds for the problem:

1. For some reason the scheduling priority of kacpid and kacpid_notify is set to -5 by default. This results in small "hangs" when the cooling fan spins up and down. This problem is solved by changing the level to 0, but you will need to do this on every boot.
2. Disable acpi. Add acpi=off to the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst
3. Downgrade the kernel. I only suffer the bug in 2.6.20-16-generic, but NOT in 2.6.17-10-generic.

Wireless LAN W200 module
This optional module sits on the lid. The chip set is an Orinoco type. The ORiNOCO-USB author, kernel hacker, Debian Developer and a contributor to a lot of other free software projects (like LIRC, qvplay or FPM), Manuel Estrada Sainz aka "Ranty" died in a car accident and there hasn't been much activities since 2004.

However, you should be able to get it working by following the guide from this page

At the time I'm writing this, i am unable to use knetwormanager to manage the wireless connection. If i try using knetworkmanager, the computer freezes. I have to manually connect from shell by using the following commands:

sudo iwconfig eth1 essid essid enc key
sudo dhclient

I have not tested the modem and can't confirm that this is working
